In practice since 2002, Kelley R. Southerland is an experienced domestic relations law practitioner who focuses her practice on the best interests of children. She is a collaborative law professional, a litigator, a trained mediator, Child and Family Investigator, Parenting Coordinator, Decision-Maker, and Guardian ad litem. Her degrees in philosophy and religion help provide Kelley with open-minded perspectives on all cases she encounters. Since entering law practice, Kelley has undertaken extensive trial practice study, mediation training, and continuing education on issues related to families and children. Kelley’s education is balanced with her experience in the field of domestic relations, allowing her to provide thoughtful service to all the children and families she works with. Kelley has a genuine interest in people. Kelley deals effectively and well with the public, and is skilled at handling matters when people need the most help. She loves to help people and children in conflict to keep a positive, healthy focus. When the needs of children affect a case, she is focused on helping everyone involved in the matter to put the best interests of children first. Kelley has served more than 100 children and numerous families in Dependency and Neglect cases in Denver Juvenile Court. She takes time to get to know each child individually, and she often forms lasting bonds with the families and children she serves. Kelley regularly attends trainings and CLEs associated with her practice serving families and children. Kelley is knowledgeable about services available to children and families, as she conducts investigations and regularly makes detailed recommendations to the Court about the best interests of children. Kelley understands the importance of timely investigations and detailed, thorough Reports as both a Guardian ad litem and as a Child and Family Investigator. Kelley is active in her legal community. She has been a member of the Thompson G. Marsh Inn of Court since 2003, and has served as Treasurer of the Inn since 2007. Kelley has recently been elected as President-Elect of the Marsh Inn for 2010-2011. She is excited and honored to serve as President of the Inn in 2011-2012. She served as Co-Chair of the Membership Committee of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association in 2009-2010. She remains a proud and active member of the CWBA. She serves as a Board Member of the Legal Community Credit Union of Colorado. Kelley is a member of the Colorado Bar Association Family Law and Juvenile Law sections. Kelley is a member of the Colorado Council of Mediators and Mediation Organizations. Kelley enjoys membership in the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, and the Colorado Collaborative Law Professionals organizations. Kelley joined the Colorado Judicial Institute this year as a General Member and is looking forward to active membership in that organization. Kelley loves to enjoy the benefits of living in Colorado and spends a great deal of time in the winter alpine skiing and enjoying the snow. In the summer, Kelley enjoys road-bike riding and hiking. Kelley is a classically-trained pianist, and continues to take piano lessons and perform the occasional recital. She enjoys live classical music performances and attends as often as she is able, especially organ recitals, piano recitals, and chamber music performances.
